Your wedding is approaching and you’ve thought of everything. You’ve booked an interesting venue for your ceremony and reception. You’ve chosen music that reflects your personality. You have a wedding cake that is gorgeous, with beautiful red frosting roses cascading down the sides.

But, wait, what’s that standing on top of your beautiful cake? That’s not a bride and groom figurine standing stiffly arm-in-arm, looking more like they’re ready for a trip to the dentist rather than a trip down the aisle, is it?

The truth is the wedding cake is one of the things people remember most about weddings. And, other than the couple getting married, the wedding cake is one of the most photographed objects at the wedding. Why? Because it represents this joyous event. Personalization – a definite trend in wedding cakes

21st Century brides and grooms want the wedding cake to be as individual as they are.

There used to be a time when brides chose a cake from the catalog the baker gave them, or brought a picture from a magazine. Today brides as well as grooms, realize how special they are and do not want a replica of a pictured cake. Aware that the wedding cake is the centerpiece of their reception, they want to have their cake individually designed to their own personal style and taste, both taste in design and taste in flavor. So they put on their thinking caps and are coming in with their own ideas, usually coordinating their cake design, the frosting design, the decorations and the cake topper, with the wedding color scheme, wedding theme, bridal attire, flowers, wedding accessories, reception hall decor, and if they have children, the family.

Once you have decided what type of wedding cake you want and have at least a general idea of the design you want, it’s time to begin visiting bakeries. When you do, be sure to taste their wedding cake samples. Don’t let yourself be swayed by talk about the ingredients they use, taste their wedding cake samples and decide for yourself because, frankly, your guests aren’t going to know if your wedding cake was made from flour imported from a water powered mill on the south bank of a coastal stream in upper Scotland. All they are going to know is whether or not your wedding cake tastes good and looks good. So let taste (and artistry) be your gauge in choosing your bakery to provide your cake.

Look at the pictures that the bakery has of past wedding cakes to decide if the bakery is even capable of doing what you have in mind. Toward this end, it is helpful to have a picture in hand to show the decorator what you want, that way they will know what part of their wedding cake portfolio to show you (though you might want to peruse the entire thing just in case you see a wedding cake that you like even better).

Take the time to talk to the decorator and try to develop a rapport. You may not have much contact with them once you place your order but it is important that you are certain that they have understood and are going to create the wedding cake that you want rather than some fantasy from their mind (which might or might not reflect your tastes and values).
